The Harbor Pilots' dispatcher called this morning to report that the
pilots' visual observations of currents at OPT were 0.5 knots lower
than reports on the PORTS screen. It could be a case of vertical
shear.

I (ML) spoke with the pilot who reported the problem at Old Port Tampa
(VTAM). He was bringing in a ship at 0200 EST on 1/18/99 and
noticed that PORTS was reporting 0.6 kts. of current when his
estimate from flow past buoy and from his ship's motion was
0.1 kts. or less. Can someone at NOS provide plots of vertical
structure from the VTAM ADCP for each reading (i.e., a plot of speed
vs. depth for all bins at each 6-min. interval) from 0130 to 0230 EST
on 1/18/99? I want to look at the vertical shear as the tide changed
from flood to ebb.
